Buying products from your local business has many economic, social and environmental benefits.  Buying local can help boost the local economy. One study in the city of Chicage found that for every $100 spent at a local business $68 remained in the city compared to only $43 for that same amount at a chain retailer. Buying local can help  the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to transportation and reductions in packaging.  Working with local business has social benefits such as helping to build and foster community and social cohesion.   

The LEED  building rating program  among others has recognized this by including   credit for regional(i.e. local) materials extracted, harvested, recovered manufactured within 100 miles of the project site.
